McVitie was found by Robert McVitie. His intense passion for baking made him establish a bakery in Edinburgh in the year 1830.Robert Junior carried forward by producing the world’s original digestive biscuits.

In 1893 McVitie knocked the royal opportunity of approval for baking a wedding cake for the future Queen Mary and King George V. In the year 1901 they have expanded their business to London. McVitie’s first factory outside Edinburgh was in Harlesden.

McVitie helped the government in crisis by supplying iron ration plain biscuits to WW1 soilders.In 1948 McVitie and Macfarlane Lang were united to form United biscuits. In 1980 McVitie’s Digestive became the most imported biscuits in Nigeria. They have launched Hob-nob in the year 1985 which was an Oat cookie. It was successful in the market so its chocolate variant was introduced in 1987.

In the year 2009 United Biscuits have opened their first wholly-owned factory in Chandigarh, India. The time period between 2012-1013 McVitie’s launched a television campaign in order to bring awareness about the presence of whole wheat against Maida i.e. the white flour to the Indian consumers.

Many varieties of McVitie’s were launched in India like Hobnobs, Bourbon, Marie, Creams and Cookies. In the year 2015 McVitie’s have launched the whole wheat Marie to build further on its whole wheat platform in India in addition to its digestive range and continues to promote and educate the consumers about the benefits of whole wheat. In 2016 McVitie’s have launched 2 media campaigns to build on its core proposition of ‘Yeh Habit Hai Fit’, in which they have encouraged the Indians in pursuing a fit lifestyle by healthy snacking. In the initial days they had 5000 workers. They had biscuits of different shapes and one of them was in the shape of walnut. The biscuits are made of whole wheat and baking soda.

McVitie’s are having a top secret recipe. Around the 20th century they became the best sellers. The digestive chocolate biscuit was 2nd in popularity. One McVitie’s factory is having a capacity to produce upto 10 million biscuits a day. Recently in July,2017 they have celebrated the 125 years of greatness.
